An experimental design is a type of research method that studies the association between the independent and dependent variables. Experimental research design is a major means of scientific inquiry and in social science, as it gives room for a scientific hypothesis, testing, variable control, and measurement. The researcher can decidedly control and manipulate the variables and subject to establish a cause-and-effect relationship.
An example of experimental design would include laboratory and field studies, whereby a group is placed in an
experimental group and another in a placebo or control group. A “significant degree of control occurs in this
type of study resulting in the least amount of bias, as it occurs mostly in a highly controlled environment with
the researcher’s ability to manipulate and control the independent variables” (McNiff &Petrick, 2018). An
nursing example of experimental research would be the study of the effect of antimicrobial wipes for catheter
care in reducing catheter associated urinary tract infections (CAUTI).
Non-experimental research is purely observational and descriptive in nature. An example of non-experimental
research would include correlational and observational research. While the former, “focus on statistical
relationships between variables that can be measured but not manipulated, the later focus on participant
observation and recording of their behavior with the researcher interfering or manipulating any variables” (Price
et al.,2017). There are three types of non-experimental research, cross-sectional research, correlational
research, and observational research (Price et al., 2017). Non-experimental research lacks any level of control,
as it lacks manipulation of any independent variable. Researchers simply measure variables as they occur and
relies on observational data, interpretation, which leads one to a conclusion from the data (Price et al., 2017). A
nursing research example would be the study on the incidence of lower back pain / work injuries among
nurses.
