A response essay is one where you explore, less formally than in a literary analysis essay, important elements
of a story and your reactions to those elements as a way to come to a better understanding of this story.
For this 3-4 page essay, choose one of the short stories we have read during The Short Fiction Unit to focus
and write about your exploration of the story.
Some questions you might explore are: How does the story make you feel? What do the characters think or
feel (if we know)? What is the meaning of the story? What drives the characters? What conflicts do the
characters face? What events do the characters participate in? How does the point of view shape the story?
