Topic 1: Payment to College Athletes
Payment to college athletes is one of the most controversial sports finance debates that never reach a verdict. While a good percentage of the public holds the opinion
that college athletes should be paid, most of the stakeholders such as the colleges maintain that college athletes receive more than enough incentives to compensate
for the time and energy spent in participation of school games ("A Way to Start Paying College Athletes - The New York Times.” N.pag.). Some states have passed
laws that give college athletes a good pay, which makes other states that do not support huge payments to college athletes, to receive criticism from the public.
Considering that a college athlete does the same amount of work or more as a club athlete, and the huge amount of revenue that the athletes generate for their learning
institutions, it is only fair that the athletes be paid like club sports players.
Topic 2: Sports Insurance for Retired NFL Players
The question of who should cater for retired football players medical bills is still being debated in many countries. An average NFL player lasts about 3.9 seasons as
reported by NFL’s players Association. Researchers indicate that most of the retired players require a job in replacement of their sports career to be able to pay for
their costly treatment. Studies show that retired NFL players suffer arthritis and neurological illnesses such as ALS and Alzheimer ’s disease, five times more than
their peers. Critiques argue that NFL does not offer enough medical support to its retired players. The NFL health insurance caters for players health bills for only
five years after retirement while serious health consequences of the players manifest even after a decade of retirement. This issue is a sensitive area of focus for a
researcher in sports finance.
Topic 3: Footballers Impact on the Economy
Premier League tax delivered 1 billion Euros in the 2011-2012 season, the highest recorded in history. While critiques argue that stars receive way too much of wages,
they have a huge contribution to the Exchequer that is often overlooked. About 725 billion Euros were contributed to the Exchequer by the 20 Premier League clubs.
Without a doubt, footballers may have a substantial impact on the Economy.
