Starr exists in two worlds
Analyze how Starr exists in two worlds. How does she exist in the “liminal space”? How does she engage in “code-switching”? Can you provide examples of people you have seen, or perhaps from your own life, living in two different worlds? How does Starr evolve as a character and transcend the limits of the two worlds?
Sample Solution
Starr Carter is an example of someone who exists in two worlds. Starr navigates between two very different environments - the poor, predominantly black neighborhood she grew up in and the privileged, mostly white prep school she attends. In both of these spaces, Starr has to adjust in order to fit in. She experiences a unique kind of “in-between” status that is often referred to as a liminal space – where cultural identities are challenged and negotiated. As a result, Starr learns how to engage in what is known as code-switching: changing her language or behavior depending on which world she is inhabiting.
For instance, when Starr goes home to Garden Heights, she speaks differently with her family than when she's at Williamson Prep Academy with her friends from school. At home, she uses slang words like “lit” and “turnt” When interacting with everyone else outside of Garden Heights; however, those terms are not well received so instead opts for more formal language like “exciting” or “energetic." This type of behavior allows her to move between these two worlds without any interference or consequence––She can be herself while still having access to resources that other people may not have access to because of their economic standing.
This same idea applies not just within social groups but also within broader contexts such as workplaces and educational institutions; it often requires forming separate narratives about oneself based on one's environment or context––a skill which is especially powerful for minorities who need this ability for survival purposes rather than just convenience sake (Ladson-Billings 1998).
We can see examples of people living in two different worlds almost everywhere today—from low income families striving for upward mobility through education programs geared towards them (such as GED classes) all the way up into high powered executive positions at corporate firms.. Individuals must learn how navigate these different cultures by adapting communication styles accordingly; they must also develop an understanding of their own individual privilege and/or lack thereof depending on the situation they find themselves in which helps shape their understanding of each world they exist within.
As Starr evolves throughout The Hate U Give novel series written by Angie Thomas , we witness her growth through transcending the limits set forth by existing only between the two worlds mentioned earlier connected by code switching skills along with newfound understandings associated with both places . For example , when staring comes face-to -face with police brutality after witnessing Khalil's death during Part 1 , this event forces stares consciousness outwards from its original state followed by a profound understanding ; due too rising awareness regarding media coverage surrounding cases similar Khalil's , Star begins advocating against systemic violence imposed upon African American individuals . Ultimately , Stares development progresses beyond simply being able amplify her voice across both sides ; Instead stared focuses energy toward addressing injustices around race inequality reform efforts made possible due too building an empowered identity stemming from pursuing knowledge involving connections across barriers .
