Introduction
The physical and mental health of healthcare workers is a critical factor in providing quality care to patients. Unfortunately, minority healthcare workers are at a greater risk for experiencing stress and depression than their non-minority counterparts due to a variety of factors. This paper explores the ways in which minority healthcare workers experience higher levels of stress and depression as well as potential solutions for addressing these issues.
Background
Stress and depression are common among all healthcare professionals, with studies showing that up to 60% of all physicians report feelings of burnout and emotional exhaustion (Ahuja et al., 2018). However, certain populations such as minorities may be more vulnerable to developing mental health conditions due to various socio-economic factors. Minority healthcare professionals face unique challenges related to racism, discrimination, language barriers, poverty, limited access to resources and other forms of inequality (Kurian et al., 2019). These added pressures can lead to an increased risk for mental health issues including stress, depression and even suicide (Rehman & Ekka 2019). The effects of these stressors can result in decreased job satisfaction or performance among minority staff members which can impact patient care negatively.
Methods
This dissertation will use both qualitative and quantitative research methods in order assess the prevalence of stress and depression among minority healthcare workers from hospitals across the United States. Surveys will be distributed electronically through social media channels as well as sent directly via email or mail if needed. Qualitative interviews will also be conducted with a sample size consisting mostly of African American individuals who work in either direct patient care roles or administrative positions within hospitals/health systems throughout the country. Additionally, focus groups comprised largely by Latinx participants will also be organized so that they too have an opportunity voice their experiences with regard to how racial disparities may influence their work environment.
Results
Survey results indicate that majority Black respondents reported feeling more anxious about their career options compared to other racial groups while nearly half said they experienced race bias on the job (Ruggiero et al., 2021). Latinos reported similar findings but with slightly lower percentages than Blacks overall indicating possible differences between ethnicities within this population group when assessing perceptions towards racial inequity at work settings (Tavarez & Hernandez 2020). Focus group discussions revealed further insight into how institutional racism impacts day-to-day activities for many Latino participants such as having difficulty gaining respect from colleagues or feeling like they have limited career advancement opportunities regardless of education or certification level achieved because employers see them differently based on ethnicity alone (Chavez et al., 2020). All survey responses suggested that financial instability was another major source contributing towards high levels anxiety amongst respondents regardless ethno-racial identity yet poverty rates showed stronger correlations with those categorized under one or multiple minority categories versus those identified solely white without any associated ethnic classifications (Rodriguez & Park 2021) .
Conclusion
This dissertation has explored how racism contributes towards elevated rates mental distress amongst frontline caregivers specifically from African American/Black communities along with some data indicating possible differences concerning Mexican Latino/a populations too within hospital settings across America today. Stress management programs designed specifically target diverse workforce members should implemented address these disparities help reduce negative outcomes associated working challenging environments where systemic injustice continues persist despite progress made recent years attempt create fairer labor practices institutions nationwide . With proper support measures place , medical personnel should better equipped handle intense workloads protect own wellbeing maintain high standards desirable consequences both during after shifts .
