In Sontag’s essay A Century of Cinema she expresses strong opinions about contemporary films: They are
astonishingly witless, “bloated, derivative…a brazen combination of re-combining art” (paragraph 1), and
reduced to “assaulting images, and the unprincipled manipulation of images (faster and faster cutting) to be
more attention grabbing” (paragraph 6). At the same time, the are “disconnected, light weight…and don’t
demand anyone’s full attention” (paragraph 6). Using at least 2-3 contemporary films that you have seen and
write an essay in which you agree, disagree (or both) with her argument.
