Talking With Patients About Quitting Smoking

Because of the serious detrimental effects of smoking, education about quitting smoking is a priority for nursing interventions when caring for patients who smoke. Major organizations that emphasize the role of nurses in helping patients quit smoking include the American Nurses Association, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, and The Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations.

E-cigarettes are known by many different names. They are sometimes called “e-cigs,” “e-hookahs,” “mods,” “vape pens,” “vapes,” “tank systems,” and “electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS).”

What's the Buzz About E-cigarettes?

You've probably seen or heard about e-cigarettes, also called vapes, e-cigs, mods, or shisha alternatives. They're electronic gadgets that heat a liquid to create a cloud you inhale. They come in all sorts of cool-looking designs – some like pens, USB sticks, even everyday items.

But Cool Doesn't Mean Safe! Here's the Real Deal:

⚠️ NICOTINE IS ADDICTIVE & HARMFUL, ESPECIALLY FOR GROWING BRAINS!

Most e-cigarettes contain nicotine, the same addictive drug found in regular cigarettes.

Your brain is still developing until your mid-20s. Nicotine can harm brain development, affecting learning, memory, and attention.

Getting hooked on nicotine now makes it much harder to quit later and increases your risk of addiction to other substances.
