A leader who can effectively adjust their approach to align with the specific needs of each situation can more effectively motivate and manage teams. Additionally, adapting one’s own situational leadership style allows for increased creativity which can lead to greater innovation within an organization (Zaccaro et al., 2001).
Having the ability to adjust one’s own situational leadership style enables a leader to better meet individual team member needs. Depending on the task at hand or how familiar employees are with certain processes or procedures, a leader may need to take on more directive roles in order for operations to run smoothly (Kouzes & Posner, 1987). On the other hand, when dealing with motivated and experienced teams during times of change or new projects it may be beneficial for leaders take a less hands-on approach so that employees feel empowered by having autonomy over their work. Consequently, having these two methods available means that leaders have options they can draw from depending on what works best in any given moment (Alderfer et al., 1978).
Adapting one’s own situational leadership style also increases team morale by promoting collaboration between members. Often times when faced with difficult decisions or goals it can seem easier just give direct orders without taking into account everyone's opinion. However this fosters an environment where decision making rests solely on senior staff members instead of allowing all parties involved an equal platform from which their voices could be heard(Yukl 2010). In contrast if leaders were required to adapt their behavior according to each situation there would be stronger ties between collaborators resulting in improved relationships among team members(James & Jones 2011) . Furthermore these situations opportunities where peers could learn from each other; facilitating knowledge sharing among colleagues adds value within organizations as well as engendering productive relationships throughout departments(Schmieder 2016 ).
In conclusion being able change/evolve one's own situational leadership style has great potential benefits both professionally and personally It promotes creative problem solving while giving all parties involved a chance not only express themselves but also influence decision making processes ultimately increasing efficiency across organizations(Blokdijk 2017). Therefore developing your interpersonal communication skills , understanding different perspectives , reading body language etc coupled with using proper judgment will enable you become well rounded masterful leader capable utilizing various styles depending upon each individual context.(Sadowsky et al., 2000 )
