What would you say is the aesthetic value of poetry? Why do you think poets find meaning in making poems that sometimes trace in their sounds the faint sonic “footprints” of poets who went before–the masters of
influence? What is this enchantment that the old works on the new?
And why does the reader of poetry (yourself) find enchantment in reading poetry? (By reading, of course, we
speak of listening.)
(If you do not love Poetry or find it enchanting, this is probably not the question, or the essay, you should work on. One’s temperament must bend to the sound to truly make use of the opportunity to write about hearing
influences of old poetry in the new. But I had to include this question for those whose hearts and minds do truly bend to the sound of Poetry.)
