An ostomy is an artificial opening on the abdominal wall through which waste material passes out of the body from the bowel or urinary tract. It provides a means for the collection of waste from a surgically diverted biological system (colon, ileum, bladder) and the creation of a stoma. Pouching systems are commonly associated with colostomies, ileostomies, and urostomies. The most common are ileostomy & colostomy for gastrointestinal diversions and urostomy for urinary diversion.
