The incarceration rate in the United States is historically high compared to other Western Industrial nations.
Arizona’s is also high, being the 5th highest in the US (behind Louisiana, Oklahoma, Mississippi, and Arkansas
according to the Bureau of Justice Statistics.
Respond to the following:
Why do you think Arizona’s rate is high and how do you feel about this? Are there too many people in jail or
prison, does it seem about right, or would you agree with Senator Tom Cotton (R-Arkansas) that the US has an
“under-incarceration problem” (i.e. too few people incarcerated)? Why?
