The Color of Justice
The Color of Justice Chapter 3
Order Description
Assignment:
Observe and Analyze #2 – Census data on Boston: race, poverty, and crime.
Directions:
Gather information: Using online resources (see list below for ideas), compare crime patterns in Boston with structural characteristics related to race and economic
status (income, poverty, etc.)
Analyze: Do you find evidence that supports or refutes the conclusion of this chapter that these structural factors impact crime? Describe your findings, citing your
sources. Note: you do not have to do PhD level analysis here. Just look for general trends that relate to residential segregation, indicators of economic inequality
(income, etc.) and crime/victimization.
Theory: Finally, relate your findings to one or more of the theories discussed in this chapter. Make sure your ideas make sense in the context of the data you found.
If you do not find evidence of structural factors that relate to crime patterns, explain why you think that is.
