Problem Statement: Despite economic growth, poverty levels remain high in the US, with over 40 million people currently living below the poverty line. Increasing economic inequality has exacerbated this problem, with research showing that since 1980 wealth distribution has become increasingly uneven. Additionally, automation is projected to lead to job losses which could contribute further to poverty levels. A UBI could potentially address these issues by providing more stability for vulnerable populations who are struggling financially due to low wages or unemployment.
Literature Review: Scholars have generally agreed that UBI can help reduce poverty levels and increase financial stability for those at risk of falling into poverty due to job loss or wage stagnation. Research also indicates that UBI can potentially improve labor market participation rates by allowing people flexibility in when they choose to work or pursue education; this increased mobility could create new opportunities for individuals who may otherwise be limited by their current situation. However, there are also concerns about potential problems related to implementation such as cost-effectiveness given administrative costs and incentives encouraging reduced labor force participation if benefits exceed earnings from work; these factors should be taken into account when designing any policy framework around UBI programs.
Proposed Solution: The proposed solution is designed around making UBI an effective tool for reducing poverty while still taking into consideration potential trade-offs related to cost-effectiveness and incentives concerning labor supply decisions among recipients of UBI payments.
