Early adolescence is marked by physical growth spurts and pubertal changes such as acne, body odor, breast development for girls, facial hair for boys, etc. Cognitively speaking, adolescents begin to think more abstractly during this period, are able to weigh consequences of their actions more effectively than was possible before, and start developing moral reasoning skills. Socially they begin to redefine relationships with family members as well as peers; they may also become interested in dating although this usually doesn’t happen until later in the sub-period or even beyond it. Emotionally they tend to experience strong feelings due to hormonal changes but may struggle with expressing them appropriately due to lack of maturity.
