Choose a topic of interest that you would like to address, in conjunction with a population at-risk for the associated topic. Submit the topic and associated group to your instructor for approval.

Topic: Prevention of Dengue Fever in School Age Children Focus Group: School age children (ages 5-17) living in tropical climates Proposal for Health Education: The goal of this health education program will be to reduce the prevalence of dengue fever among school-age children.
This will be accomplished through a comprehensive educational program that focuses on preventive measures, including encouraging the use of insect repellents and protective clothing; educating families on how to identify areas where mosquitoes breed and eliminating potential breeding sites; teaching about proper disease management should someone become infected with dengue fever; and informing families about available resources to learn more information. These objectives will be attained through an interactive family-centered educational approach.
For prevention purposes, school-aged children living in tropical climates must understand that they are at risk for contracting dengue fever if they are not properly protected when outside or while indoors in warm humid environments. To emphasize this point, students should participate in activities such as role playing different scenarios which involve mosquito bites or watching videos demonstrating proper application methods for insect repellent. Other activities could include outdoor scavenger hunts to identify standing water sources around the home that can serve as mosquito breeding grounds, creating informative posters about proper management strategies for those who have been infected by dengue fever and other similar tasks. Additionally, parents/caregivers should attend separate sessions specifically focused on providing them with further information regarding health promotion strategies associated with avoiding contact with mosquitos and managing symptoms related to infection from dengue fever. It is important these topics are discussed together so that both student's AND parent's knowledge base is increased simultaneously allowing them to collaborate on ways to practice safe habits at home or outdoors when travelling abroad during times of high risk exposure (i.e., summer vacations).
