The hearsay rule is a principle in the law of evidence that excludes secondhand statements made outside of the courtroom from being presented as evidence to prove the truth of the matter asserted. The reason for this rule is to ensure the reliability of evidence by giving both sides the opportunity to cross-examine the person who actually made the statement.
