The Idea of Asia through transnational popular culture

      Asian popular culture has had a huge global impact in the last few decades, rangingfrom Bollywood, K-pop, to anime. This group will choose a limited number of examples to compare and contrast. Questions might include: are there differences between how the phenomenon (a film, a musical group, a manga series, etc.) is perceived and accepted within its country of origin, in the Asian region, and in the broader global context? Why did your chosen phenomenon become populartransnationally? How can you contextualize your phenomenon in light of the “ideasof Asia outside of Asia” readings we are exploring? What are the implications? How are boundaries drawn and distinctions made? Howare alliances formed, and strategically invoked? Who is saying what about Asia, and for what reasons? What are the implications of a particular phenomenon?
