- Conduct appropriate research, approaching the school violence incident from your assigned perspective.
- Submit an original discussion post in which you:
a. Explain what constitutes your assigned perspective. (What is the philosophy behind a criminological approach, a criminal justice approach, or a public health approach to specific school violence?) This will lay the groundwork for an overall understanding of how the pieces fit together.
b. Propose solutions (methods, policies, or practices which could mitigate the effects of school violence) based on your assigned perspective.

- The Santa Fe high school shooting was a devastating tragedy that is very complex in the different approaches that are taken to attempt to understand it. The criminal justice approach establishes what occurred the day of the shooting with the investigation following. There’s also the plan that the school had in place for an active shooter and the two officers that the school had on guard that day that engaged the shooter within minutes of the first shot.
- With a criminal justice approach on this incident there are two important lessons that can be used to prevent a reoccurrence. The first is that the officers on duty should receive more training for an active shooter. The officers took 30 minutes to apprehend the shooter after they engaged with him which allowed for more casualties. They should receive more training as a means to learn more and gain better experience practicing so they can be better prepared in the future. The second lesson that should be learned is that Texas should implement a law that punishes guardians of children who steal guns from the house and attempt violent acts. It was first mentioned soon after the shooting but was shelved and still has not been brought up again. It would be a clear deterrent as it would force parents to be more mindful of their guns and their children.

- Assessing the public health perspective of the school shooting that took place in Santa Fee is interesting especially in the sense that it occurred shortly after the school shooting in parkland. The school had already taken on some additional measures such as adding to the amount of armed school officers on campus. They also considered arming teacher prior to this tragedy but had not yet put this measure in force. Unlike the suspect in Parkland, this shooter had no signs that suggested he would unleash the amount of horror he did. It is important that we account for factors in place to protect these incidents with a public health perspective because this philosophy suggests that if we look at potential situations in an individual, group and facility basis we will have a better understanding of how to properly protect and educate youths and educators who be at risk.
- Coming from a public health perspective I think the most viable and best way to reduce the likelihood of future tragedies like the Santa Fee shooting in our schools we need to improve the quality of education children are reviewing. Children need to understand how weapons work and how dangerous they are especially if they have one within their household. Statistically speaking more people die each year from car accidents than people by gun violence, if we can teach young people how to operate cars safely and responsibly we need to have these same kind of measures in place fro guns and other weapons. I also think it would be beneficial to increase the amount of resources available to students for emotional support, hire more counselors, hold more group sessions, teach students about mental health and how to take care of themselves in this capacity. Kids can be cruel to one another and teenagers are already filled with so many raging emotions as they enter puberty they need to be able to have safe places to speak about their feelings and fears, they need to know that the feelings they have are normal and when they aren’t normal anymore they need adults who care to be by their side and help them learn to work through it.
