Problem-Oriented Policing: The Most Viable and Effective Form of Law Enforcement Law enforcement is a critical component to society, as it helps to prevent crime and protect citizens from harm. As a result, police departments across the world are constantly exploring new tactics in order to create a more effective means of law enforcement. One such tactic tha
has been proven to be effective is problem-oriented policing (POP). Problem-oriented policing focuses on identifying specific problems within an area and finding solutions that target those particular issues. This form of law enforcement is based on the premise that by addressing particular issues with tailored strategies, overall crime can be reduced. In this paper, I will explain why problem-oriented policing is the most viable and effective form of law enforcement through research on its effectiveness, definitions of what makes it effective, and possible limitations associated with this type of policing. Research has shown that problem-oriented policing is highly successful in reducing crime rates over time when compared to traditional forms of policing such as reactive patrol and standard community oriented approaches (Brown et al., 2017). Studies have demonstrated how POP can reduce certain offenses or behaviors by up to 20% in targeted areas (Weisburd et al., 2004; White & Gabbidon 2011). One example occurred in Philadelphia where researchers conducted an experiment using POP methods which resulted in decreased levels of robbery throughout the city (Guerette & Bowers 2009). Furthermore, another study conducted by Weisburd et al., found that after implementing intervention measures designed around problem solving techniques there was an 18% reduction in robberies committed near public housing buildings (2004). Additionally, Brown et al., studied REDX sites – designated high offender locations – utilizing POP tactics which resulted in reduced incidents involving theft offences significantly lower than similar sites not receiving the same treatment interventions (2017) These findings suggest that when implemented properly through evaluation measures based upon regular reports from crime analysts regarding changes within local communities so adjustments can be made accordingly if necessary -problem oriented policing can generate positive outcomes for areas experiencing persistent criminal activity Defining what makes Pop effectively comes down to understanding three key components; these include partnership building between police officers members within their local communities , careful analysis on emerging trends occurring within targeted regions pertaining too crimes or behavioral concerns being addressed; lastly having policies put into place concerning accountability when it comes too evaluating success rates associated with various interventions aiming at decreasing criminal activities being reported . When all three aspects work together effectively this allows for greater collaboration among citizens and law enforcement . For example Reducing gun violence by working closely with anti violence organizations such as faith based initiatives or youth organizations throughout different cities could help address underlying factors affecting certain neighborhoods allowing for deeper understanding leading towards improved relationships between both parties involved resulting ultimately better results concerning violent crimes taking place throughout region being monitored(Rosenbaum 2012 ; Rosenstock 2013). Although there are many advantages associated with problem‐oriented policing techniques some potential drawbacks must also be considered. A major limitation lies within partial implementation where police may only choose certain elements they find more manageable while neglecting other important components needed complete implementation process properly (Bordner 2016 ) . Another issue could revolve around lack resources available funding perhaps due structural financial restraints created during institution process preventing full deployment which leads inability measure proper outcome goals set before launch initiative takes effect defeating purpose entire initiative begin with further creating complications run program efficiently overtime(Coyne 2014 ). Finally incorrect data input gathered lead faulty conclusions generalizations causing failure application methods used due wrong assessment information analyzed negatively impacting success intervention attempt even more likely occur citizen distrust would drastically increase failing give sufficient returns desired much money invested effort expended goes waste In conclusion , although there are potential drawbacks surrounding implementation processes , evidence suggests proof way correct utilize given situation correctly provides best chance successful outcome cases come across agencies globally making Problem Oriented Policing most viable option considered far efficient manner achieving desired results wanted currently time References Bordner R 2016 ‘Doing Problem Oriented Policing Right’ Police Chief Magazine 83(4):34–39     Brown D McFarlane K Broidy L Stansfield J 2017 ‘Reducing Burglary Rates Through Crime Analysis : An Experiment Comparing Predictive versus Tactical Strategies’ Journal Criminal Justice 46:21–30 Coyne S 2014 ‘Factors Impacting Successful Implementation Problem Solving Model’ Public Administration Quarterly 38(2):198–226 Guerette RT Bowers KJ 2009 ‘The Reduction Robbery Risk Through Deployment Markers Tested Using Spatial Panel Models’ Criminology 47(3): 871–914 Rosenbaum DP 2012 ‘Community Problemsolving Justice Reform Coproduction Cities : Perspectives Context Community Research Practice' International 12:193–215 Rosenstock E 2013 ‘Police Partnerships With Communities Social Support Organizations Help Reduce Gun Violence Chicago’ Community Mental Health Journal 49:213–219 Weisburd DL Groff ER Kane RL Miller SE Legerski EJ 2004 “Does Displacement Matter?
