Mary is 25 years old and married to her husband Andy for 5 years. Over the years Andy became violent and he
started to control Mary’s day to day activities closely. Andy prohibited Mary from seeing her family and friends.
He does not let her to go out except for the weekly shopping. One day Mary wanted to meet her friend Nelia and
told Andy that she was going to the supermarket as they had run out of milk. However, Andy decided to come
home early on that day and saw Mary and her friend sitting in a cafeteria. When Mary arrived home, she was
beaten up by Andy. The following day when Andy was at work, Mary rang the local police station and asked
them to help her. The policeman perceived this as a private affair between the couple and considered it as an
isolated incident.
Discuss Mary’s victimization by considering the victim typologies, routine activity, and lifestyle theories.
