What did you find important from the video, "What Really Matters at the End of Life? N.B. watch those videos to do this module discussion. 1)"Death, Dying & Rebirth Webinar Replay with Dr. Zach Bush" 2)"TED What really matters at the end of life | BJ Miller" 3)"TED What we can do to die well | Timothy Ihrig" and these handouts-links are essential for the module discussion https://www.mainedeathwithdignity.org/ https://www.oregon.gov/oha/ph/providerpartnerresources/evaluationresearch/deathwithdignityact/pages/faqs.aspx
The “Death & Rebirth” video presented by Dr. Zach Bush highlighted the importance of understanding death as part of the cycle of life rather than an ending or something to be feared. He pointed out that in many cultures around the world, death has been seen as a gateway to rebirth or a transition into another form or state. Death should not be viewed passively but rather should be embraced as part of growth and transformation – both emotionally and spiritually. In discussing palliative care and hospice support, it was emphasized that these services provide assistance in managing physical issues associated with serious illness or injury such as pain control through medications or other therapies; emotional support for patients; bereavement counseling for loved ones; spiritual guidance if desired; social work help with financial concerns; practical tasks like arranging transportation home if needed; coordinating treatments across different providers; etc. Palliative care aims to improve quality-of-life by addressing symptoms while still providing curative treatment when indicated/possible/wanted by patient/family/caregiver(s). Hospice provides additional support services toward end-of-life when curative measures are no longer sought - ensuring patient comfort while also addressing psycho-social needs (e.g., grief counseling) & facilitating discussions on advanced directives (e.g., do Not Resuscitate order). From BJ Miller’s TED Talk on “What Really Matters at the End of Life” several important points emerged: 1) human connection trumps almost everything else 2) take action now to ensure your wishes are known/documented 3) prioritize well-being 4) look outward instead inward 5) choose how you want to participate in your own story 6) maintain balance 7) ask yourself who you don't need permission from 8 ) create rituals 9 ) laugh 10).
