Why Suicide Has Become an Epidemic--and What We Can Do to Help

Why Suicide Has Become an Epidemic--and What We Can Do to Help Order Description 4-5 pages in length You are first required to find a recent article that discusses a contemporary social issue/problem. You must then write about how two different modern social theorists discussed in class would explain why the problem exists. In doing so, you are analyzing the social issue from two different theoretical perspectives. Although we talk about classical theorists, you cannot use them to analyze your paper because Sociology 468 is a modern social theory course. You must also choose two theorists from two different theoretical traditions. For example, you might compare a functionalist theorist with an exchange theory theorist or symbolic interaction theorist, but you can’t use two functionalists to explain the problem. Many times, there are a number of issues embedded in one article. Be sure to single out one issue from the article and analyze that one issue two different ways. Sometimes students take one issue from the article and analyze the issue using one theorist, and a second issue from the article and analyze it from a second theorist. Students who fail to analyze one issue from two different perspectives will have points deducted from their overall score. Part 1. Describe your social issue/problem siting your source. For example: your topic might be: Poverty among children in the U.S. Be sure to document this social issue citing your sources which tell you just how much child poverty there is in America. Is the problem getting worse? Are there as many poor children in other industrial nations? After you have summarized the article, and clearly state which social problem from the article you will be analyzing, you need to explain to the reader what you plan to do next in a sentence or two. For Example: I will now write about how Marx and Durkheim would explain why large numbers of children in America live in poverty. Remember not to make this first section top-heavy. That is do not make the bulk of your paper about the social issue. This section should be no more than a page or a page- and- a -half. Part 2. / Theoretical Analysis A. Describe how one social theorist would analyze your social problem – why would the theorist you have chosen think the problem is occurring? For example, why would the first particular theorist you have chosen believe that large numbers of American children live in poverty? B. Describe how a second social theorist would analyze your social problem – why would the second theorist think the problem is occurring? For example, why would the second particular theorist believe that large numbers of American children live in poverty? Part 3. Conclusion Conclude your paper by answering either questions A., B., or C. A. Writing which theorist you believe has the better theory for why the problem has occurred. In doing so, be sure to explain why you think the other theorist isn’t quite as good. B. If you think both theorists are equally correct in explaining the issue. In either case, be sure to fully explain why you feel the way you do about the way both theorists make sense of the social issue. When writing this paper you can only make use of the three following outside sources to make your theoretical points. 1. Edles and Appelrouth Text. 2. Dr. Kouri’s course notes and power points. 3. The article you choose for the paper. Papers that make use of sources other than the ones permitted for the paper will not be accepted. Don’t forget to include a reference page at the end of your paper. Either MLA or APA is acceptable. It’s ok to cite my Power points this way: (Kouri, PPT, Stigma by Irving Goffman, slide 4). (Kouri, PPT, Herbert Blummer, Slide 27) VIP: Last semester students plagiarized, used theorists not permitted in this outline, and used sources not permitted for this paper. These situations were handled accordingly – see syllabus for course rules. https://www.newsweek.com/2013/05/22/why-suicide-has-become-epidemic-and-what-we-can-do-help-237434.html
