Cherica Bailey Ethical dilemma 12-2 Collapse Does the individual right to bear arms outweigh the preventable health care costs from gun injuries? Based on the society
that we live in today, an individual has the right to protect oneself and their families. Anyone who is fit e.g. psychologically and physically fit to bear arms should
be able to do so. There are many different reasons why people possess a weapon. The number one reason being self-defense and protection. I do believe it is important
for preventable measures for gun injuries to be in place and it is equally as important for people to choose the right to bear arms. Even though it might seem
contradicting, they are both equally important and none outweighs the other. Â It is imperative to have gun injury prevention because it makes economic sense. For gun
rights advocates, the preventable healthcare cost of gun ownership should not outweigh the individual right to possess a gun (Hammaker, 2017). In other words, legal
rights should be defended regardless of cost. Can individual rights and social costs be reconciled? Individual rights are the freedom to act without any retribution.
Social cost should never influence individual rights (Hammaker,2017). The two aspects definitely can be reconciled. I do believe that individual rights and social cost
should coexist because the individual right to possess guns should be balanced against the cost to society arising from exercise of that right. Each individual have
the legal right to choose without having to think about the cost of their choices.
