Exploring grief and loss across diverse cultures
Part 1 – 500 words
Identify a cultural group different from your own; research and describe aspects of your selected group of interest regarding the following:
• The practices, customs and rituals following the death of a person in that cultural group;
• Religious and spiritual factors associated with death and dying in that cultural group;
• Cultural ‘norms’ regarding grief: expression, duration, rituals.
Part 2 – 1,000 words
Using Value Statement 3 from the Code of Ethics for Nurses in Australia (2005): “Nurses value the diversity of people”, and using the four (4) headings of Self, Person, Community and Colleagues contained therein, describe how you might apply this Value Statement to the provision of nursing care to a member of the cultural group described above who is experiencing loss, grief, or who is dying.
