Assignment is based on Christian Grose’s book, “Congress in Black and White: Race and Representation in Washington and at Home”.
Assignment details: Write a paper of 5 pages applying Christian Grose’s unified theory of African American representation in Congress to a U.S. Congressional district in California. Identify a district in California (I suggest looking at Jimmy Gomez’s 34th District in California), describe its relevant traits (i.e., racial and ethnic composition, partisan voting patterns in the last several elections), and analyze the quality of substantive and descriptive representation provided by that district’s current Member of Congress for one ethnic and/or racial group. Describe the U.S. Representative from the district and analyze the extent to which the elected representative provides adequate representation on both descriptive as well as substantive grounds. Your paper should include a clear rendering of Grose’s theory, a discussion of the measurement and analytical strategy undertaken in the book and the resulting findings, as well as a critical reading of those findings about racial representation. The analysis should draw conclusions about how well Grose’s perspective applies to minority political representation for a group of your choosing within the context of a U.S. Congressional district in California.
All written work should be yours alone, and any written material taken from external sources must be fully documented and cited.
Papers are due by 5 pm on Monday, April 2, 2018 and should be submitted electronically on Blackboard. That day is reserved as a paper work day and we will not meet in class.
Important Note: 3-4+ Sources are ok. The Main Source for analysis, framework and critique must be Christian Grose’s book: “Congress in Black and White: Race and Representation in Washington and at Home”.
Important Note: Please carefully review the documents I have attached to this order for they contain important information, notes, and explanations.
