Buddhist Imagery

How does Buddhism manifest itself visually in Japanese art? Choose an image of a Chinese or Indian Buddha. Then take an image of a Japanese Buddha. The Japanese Buddha must be from a later period than the Indian or Chinese Buddha. Compare and contrast these images. Look at material, scale, depiction of the human body, clothing, hair, facial features, color, etc. Observe carefully. Describe where you see Indian or Chinese influence in the Japanese Buddha. Explain what is uniquely Japanese, what aesthetic is only present in the Japanese image. It would be helpful if you worked from actual pieces rather than reproductions. You can see art from all these cultures at the Asia Society or the Metropolitan Museum of Art. (about 3 pages)
