Select an issue, challenge, or problem-area within the field of race and ethnic relations. For example, some possible issues are: affirmative action, civil rights, bilingual education, multicultural education, reverse discrimination, interracial marriages, interracial adoptions, police-minority relation. Or you might want to deal with how a certain minority group (African Americans, Puerto Ricans, Mexicans) is depicted in the media. Or the issue of discrimination against a minority group in sports, education, housing, banking, journalism, etc. Or why there is tension among groups like African Americans and Koreans, African Americans and whites, or Latinos and whites. Or you might want to write about what can be done to lessen prejudice and improve relations among groups.
select two articles–one article should come from a sociology journal, the second can be from a sociology journal or another social science journal–which address the issue or problem. Please select articles not more than ten years old. Also, please see the list of some acceptable scholarly journals. (If your selected issue is a current one and there exist no scientific articles about it, but maybe popular articles, please see me).
compare and contrast the two articles, providing: a) a brief analysis of the authors’ viewpoints; b) how the authors agree or disagree in analyzing the issue or problem; c) how the authors’ methodology, tone, conclusions, and solutions are similar or different; d) how the articles relate to concepts and materials discussed in class; e) your personal evaluation of the articles–did you like or dislike them, were they well or poorly written; f) what did you learn?
