Develop a 2-3-page paper on a selected activist and the role they have in the disability rights movement. Identify the following: the population they are advocating for, what rights are they advocating for (e.g. housing, transportation), and the progress of their advocacy (e.g. legislation, public awareness) Include 3 scholarly and peer reviewed references (e.g. course textbook, articles found in UTRGV library bank)
*Note: You are writing a partial biography of an activist; therefore include, how they came to be an activist (e.g. background, do they have the disability themselves? how did they become interested/involved in type of advocacy?)
Please include the following in your essay:
• History/Background (includes: date of birth, date of death, disability, any important family history, experiences)
• Any important organization or legislation the activist is/was involved in
a. Identify his/her role to the campaign.
b. What did he/she contribute? (e.g. public speaking, lobbying, strikes)
• What type of advocating did he/her do? (e.g. self, peer, professional). Provide examples (e.g. The activist led a group of 200 individuals on a peaceful protest in Washington, DC on February 11, 2000. The demonstration was published in newspapers such as the Washington Post. Due to the demonstration, the activist was invited to speak to the POTUS about the campaign.)
• Reflective component: Per your understanding using textbook concepts: how effective has the activist been in providing advocacy? What different strategies can he/she implement to achieve their desired outcomes? Based on the activists’ desired outcomes, how and why will the world become a better place if the desired outcome is achieved?
If available, other target areas that may be addressed to help you provide the reader (your instructor) a better understanding of your selected activists’ passion for advocacy:
