Constructing Historical Argument

You are a junior writer for the New York Times and your boss has assigned you a 300-word op-ed piece addressing the Columbus Day controversy because of recent media coverage criticizing the holiday. In previous decades, Columbus has been remembered and celebrated as the “discoverer” of America, and credited with bringing “civilization” to the New World, but in recent years, his (and other Europeans’) treatment of the native people in the Americas has become the focus of his legacy. As you have seen and read, the truth about Columbus has sparked intense protest in some communities and has caused many to advocate for the change in which Columbus is publicly regarded in our national memory. So…. according to what you’ve learned about conquest, should we continue to celebrate Columbus Day?
