Who should be held accountable for the rise in childhood Type 2 diabetes: parents or children? In U.S.A, 1 in 5 school age children are obese. And as you learn about Type 2 diabetes in Ch 5 (page 103), one of the main causes contributing to the rise of this condition is the prevalence of obesity and decreased physical activity in our population. This is true not only for adults but sadly true for our children population too. (Links to an external site.) Links to an external site. Our Western Diet is in part contributing to the rise in obesity seen in this Country. Children are also eating the same Western Diet that their parents eat. A 5-year old child can not go to the kitchen to use a knife and cut veggies to prepare healthy, colorful meals for him/her to eat. On the contrary, a 5-year old child can go to the kitchen to eat an apple or banana from the kitchen counter. But most of the times, the same child chooses to eat a bag of chips or cookies, instead of the fruits (Why?.)
