1.Interaction between Native Indians and Europeans was vastly different for each party. They ranged from peaceful to deadly for every party involved. Each entity was attempting to move there own ideals forward at what ever the cost may have been. For Europeans many people saw opportunities to start their lives over or to make exuberant amounts of money. Natives saw an exploitable asset from which they could gain many items.
During the initial colonization of the Americas British settlers would learn from Natives how to survive in the vast wilderness. The Indians shared crops, hunting, fighting and life skills that a British settler would need to survive in the unforgiving lands. The colonists would share their own crops; livestock, weapons and fighting tactics. Trading began as soon as the settlers landed and would always be a staple of frontier life. These early beginnings were not always tame and friendly. Indians and colonials alike ranged from peaceful to warlike groups. Each side would kill men, women and children alike for no reasons at all. Europeans cleared vast tracks of forested land and inadvertently introduced old world weeds.1
The French were known to be less violent then there English and Colonial counterparts. This could be do in fact to the lower numbers of settlers the French would send. The French would send mostly men and priests to the new world. Many of these men would marry Native Women to increase the overall trading abilities between the two nations.
Africans as a whole had less of a furnace time in the America’s. The earliest black settlers were free and able to gain lands, purchase and trade goods. In the 18th Century after Bacons Rebellion many blacks were brought from Africa and placed into slavery for whites. - What Tribes were present in Colonial America (13 original Colonies) during the time period? How were they organized? Did they have governments?
There were many native american tribes present in the 13 original colonies during the early colonial period. The Pequot, and Mohegans inhabited Connecticut. Delaware was inhabited by the Nanticoke, Lenni Lenape. The Creek and Cherokee inhabited Georgia. Maryland was inhabited by the Conoy, Assateague. and Susquehannock. Massachusetts had the Wampanoag, Nauset, and Massachuset tribes. Maine had the Micmac, Abenaki. New Hampsire had the Pennacook, and Abenaki. New Jersey was also inhabited by the Lenni Lenape. New York was dominated by the Iroquois and the Algonquian tribes. North Carolina had the Hatteras, Cherokee. and the Catawba. Pennsylcania had the Shawnee and the Seneca. Rhode Island had the Narragansett, and Nipmuc. South Carolina had the Yamasee, Catawba, and Cherokee. Virginia had the Powhattan tribe.
The different tribes were organized differently depending on where they were based and what lifestyles they lived. Some tribes were more organized than others and had a social structure more closely resembling what we would recognize as a loosely formed government, usually based around their pagan-like religion. The tribes were influenced heavily by the arrival of settlers and quickly incorporated social structures and governing apparatus learned from the settlers to better organize their societies. They did not really have official governments or laws but lived on loosely based codes passed down by elders and developed over time. This, combined with their mostly nomadic way of life, prevented them from developing real or lasting societies or developing the infrastructure that would have been needed to sustain larger populations and long lasting technological achievements.
