The Berlin Republic

Dresden (2006) is the country’s most expensive made-for-television production and riveted millions in 2006. It revisits one of the most notorious bombing raids during World War II. Dresden’s producer, Sascha Schwingel, considered the film especially important for Germany’s younger generations. “It’s important to tackle these themes for a younger generation of Germans, who don’t watch documentaries and who have no memories of the war.”

In your 4 page paper, provide a critical analysis of what the film achieves (or fails to achieve). A “critical analysis” does not merely recount the plot or expresses whether you like or dislike the film. In fact, I don’t want any summary at all. We all know the film. Ask yourself instead, what message/s this film distributes in modern day Germany, whether it indeed tackles the bombing war, educates its audiences, etc. In your paper you can also consider other sources you have encountered so far, e.g. the PBS documentary you’ve watched, Sebald, Friedrich, etc.
