O’Neill says on p. 270: “Intimacy makes failures of respect and of love more possible. Lack of respect in intimate relationships may, for example, take both manipulative and paternalistic forms.” Explain fully (remember, we’re still dealing with Kant here) what she means by all this, and then provide detailed examples of each of the two kinds of failures of respect. Your examples should be your own (that is, not from O’Neill’s paper or from class) and be of behavior that would be tempting to morally decent persons, rather than gross caricatures of the types. You should also avoid cases so simple that they require no careful moral thought. The point is for you to demonstrate your nuanced and subtle understanding of the Kantian notion of respect for persons.
