Reaction paper to The Lonely Doll (Wright, 1957)
The lonely doll was written as a children’s book. In spite of this, the book has often been the source of controversy as many children’s books are today. Thus, once finished reading the book, consider the following questions and challenges and answer in the paper.
1.First, write about your reactions to this book, specifically focusing on the appropriateness for its intended audience, that being children. If you were a child psychologist and a parent asked you for a recommendation in therapy for a book that their child would enjoy, would you recommend this book? Why or why not?
2.If a child read this and asked you some questions about the book (“Why was Edith spanked? Why was she left all alone in that big house?”) how would you answer him or her? Keep Piaget in mind as you think about your reply.
- Next, in your view, what is/are the latent contents of the book? By this, I mean the themes that are not apparent on the surface (manifest) but were in Wright’s “unconscious”. You may have to re-read the book to answer this question. 4.Finally, discuss how you would treat Dare Wright in therapy if she were a patient of yours, specifically focusing on which mode of therapy you would use. Preferred therapeutic modality/ modalities; write about your perspectives clearly.
