“Art.”

The purpose of this Discussion Board is to give you an opportunity to consider some visual aspects of early Western civilization that are much different from how we “view” our current culture and society. Remember that art such as paintings and sculpture are at least as much the interpretation by the painter or sculptor as they are actual reality since most or all of those art forms took some time to create. In other words, these “historical snapshots” may not always reflect reality, so you will have to do some interpretation on your own as you analyze and comment on the images you choose to write about. I am sure you will find some of what you see there to be markedly different from what our contemporary society considers to be “art.” In fact, that can present a dilemma for you since placing modern paradigms on the society and culture from many centuries ago is not always considered appropriate in the field of historical research and context. My hope is that you will see and understand with “historical eyes” when investigating such questions as are posed in this discussion.
