In-memory databases became popular in the 1990s as the amount of RAM in computers increased. As the amount of data collected increased, the cost of memory did not decrease, and in-memory databases disappeared along with cassette tapes. In-memory databases are becoming fashionable again, in the area of analytics databases. For this paper you are to research in-memory analytics databases and include the following:

  1. Introduce the topic. As the last sentence in this first paragraph, you can either give a thesis statement or include the sentence found in most CS papers: “In this paper …”
  2. Define in-memory databases, what are the advantages, disadvantages
  3. Define analytics databases, define in-memory analytics databases and describe several types of in-memory analytics applications
  4. Choose one example of an in-memory analytics database system and describe it in detail, including its architecture, query language, etc.
  5. Discuss the weaknesses of in-memory analytics databases and suggest approaches to address them.
  6. Conclusion – include what you think about the challenges of in-memory analytics databases and if you think this type of in-memory database will increase in popularity, or disappear along with (you fill this in).
