Karen O’Connor and Larry J. Sabato, American Government: Roots and Reform

What was the 2018 election outcome for each Senator and Representative listed in the table. For example, you might write under the table “Congresswoman X won the election with 168,342 votes (52%) for her versus 135,233 votes (46%) for her opponent” or “Senator Y lost the election with 3,243,543 votes (45%) for him and 3,945,266 votes (54%) for his opponent”. Please note —
Neither California Senator Kamala Harris nor Connecticut Senator Richard Blumenthal was up for re-election in 2018, and thus you should indicate this in your response if your table includes these Senators (“Senator [Harris/Blumenthal] was not up for re-election in 2018.”)
If you have difficulty finding this information, you might try politico.com (which has results for the 2016 Presidential race (Links to an external site.), the 2018 Senate races (Links to an external site.), and the 2018 House of Representatives races (Links to an external site.)) or some of the quality newspaper sites like the New York Times (which has 2016 Presidential results (Links to an external site.), 2018 Senate results (Links to an external site.) and 2018 House of Representatives results (Links to an external site.)). For House of Representatives results, you’ll need to know the number of the congressional district. For instance, Representative John Larson in Connecticut represents the 1st Congressional District in Connecticut; Representative Anna Eshoo represents California’s 18th Congressional District; etc.
In your homework submitted on-line via a Canvas text box (rather than as an attachment), please respond to the following questions (and remember to include the question itself in your response):

Which party controls the Senate as a result of the 2018 elections? How many Senators are Republicans? How many Senators are Democrats? How many are Independents? Did the number of Democratic Senators increase or decrease as a result of the election?
Which party controls the House of Representatives as a result of the 2018 election? How many Congresspeople are Republicans? How many Congresspeople are Democrats? How many are Independents? Did the number of Democratic Congresspeople increase or decrease as a result of the election?
Politico.com in its analysis of the 2018 mid-term election results (Links to an external site.) (which was assigned as part of the Week 7 module readings; pdf here: Politico – 7 takeaways from a wild midterm election .pdfPreview the document) asserts that the “2018 midterm election was both a blue wave and a red wave” (this quote is from the 1st paragraph of the article). What did they mean by this? Do you agree? Why or why not?
Politico.com in its analysis of 2018 (Links to an external site.) (pdf here: Politico – 7 takeaways from a wild midterm election .pdfPreview the document) outlines 7 “takeaway” points from the election. Are these points about the 2018 mid-term election results encouraging or discouraging (or perhaps both encouraging AND discouraging) with respect to President Trump’s 2020 re-election prospects?
