You should also consider the outcome of Ballot Initiative #1631 in Washington state in the 2018 elections. Think about these questions when applying the BC experience to the United States. How do politics and economics play a role in policymaking on climate change? What design elements of the carbon tax do officials need to consider that might impact its political acceptability by the public? What are the tradeoffs made by Premier Gordon Campbell in order to gain acceptance, and would similar decisions work in the American situation? Are the characteristics of the political system that made the carbon tax possible in British Columbia transferrable to the United States?
