Drug therapy for Alzheimer’s disease- donepezil hydrochloride, memantine hydrochloride, and benztropine mesylate
In patients with AD, levels of acetylcholine neurotransmitter are 90% below normal. AD drugs currently in use may slow loss of memory and cognition, and prolong independent function. Cholinesterase inhibitors increase the availability of acetylcholine at cholinergic synapses, that enhance transmission by cholinergic neurons that have not yet been destroyed by AD. They do not cure AD and they do not stop disease progression. They can improve memory and thinking
