Application of Airport Design Principles – Miami International Airport

Description

Your task includes conducting research and proper use of FAA AC 150/5300-13A
and other Advisory Circulars you may find useful. You will need to use Boeing’s, Airbus’ and other aviation websites such as www.airnav.com and www.airportiq5010.com to research the information you need for your aircraft and design calculations. Present your findings in a report with appropriate headings.
Report Requirements
The following requirements must be met:

  1. Setup the page with 1-inch margins all around.
  2. Font: Arial
  3. Font Size: 11
  4. Line spacing: 1.5
  5. Provide appropriate Headings with section numbers, in bold.
  6. Use Headers and Footers.
o Name and title of the paper in Header.
o Page numbers centered in the Footer.
  7. The text should be fully justified.
  8. Include a list of your references at the end of the paper.
  9. Create a cover for your report that includes the following:
    o Title
o Prepared for: Course Name and Section
    o Prepared by: Your name
    o Date
*You have been chosen to be an airport designer for Miami International Airport (MIA), Florida. Traffic volume is expected to increase and the airport is expected to handle the Airbus A380-800 and the B777-300. In addition, Runway 8L-26R will be relocated, extended and upgraded to a Cat I precision instrument runway. MIA requires the following to be accomplished in a cost-effective manner:
    A. Design solutions which will address each of the four (4) hot spots shown in the current Airport
Diagram. Please note that operational solutions will not be accepted.
    B. The extension of Runway 8L-26R and relocation to the north which will allow for simultaneous radar arrivals and departures to occur with the A380-800 and the B777-300 aircraft. One key issue is a lack of available land to the north of the existing Runway 8L-26R. The relocated and extended Runway 8L-26R will require the relocation of existing facilities south of NW 36th Street and should be free of airspace issues. In addition, the BRL for the relocated runway should not extend north of NW 36th Street.
    C. High-speed exit taxiway locations that can serve the A380-800 and B777-300 aircraft, as well as,
entrance taxiway hold lines and a full-length parallel taxiway serving the relocated runway.
    D. A Part 77 approach surface and take-off path study to investigate a proposal to construct a new hotel in the airport’s vicinity. The hotel will be located on the extended runway centerline, 2.5
miles from the departure end of Runway 26R (that is 2.5 miles west of the Runway 8L threshold).
The hotel will have a simple square box design and a rooftop elevation of 290 feet MSL.
It is your task to determine the following:
  10. Determine design solutions for the four hot spots located on the airfield. These solutions should be sketched on a base map of the airport. An explanation of why the proposed solutions are recommended should be provided. (20 points)
  11. Conduct a Runway Length Study to determine the recommended length for Runway 8L-26R.
Given the following conditions: (40 points)
    a. Payload breakpoint for the A380-800 and the B777-300 aircraft.
    b. MLW for the A380-800 and the B777-300 aircraft.
    c. Mean Maximum Temperature: 86 degrees Fahrenheit d. The maximum difference in runway centerline elevations: 14 feet
Catalog the relevant aircraft including engines they are equipped with. Include all of the marked-up performance charts and calculations in an appendix.

Determine the future centerline to centerline separation of the relocated Runway 8L-26R and
Runway 8R-26L is given the restrictions for the new runway’s protective surfaces. Determine, how much the runways should be staggered if required. In addition, describe all of the enabling projects that will allow for the runway’s relocation and identify where existing facilities will be relocated to the airport. Use diagrams and sketches as appropriate. (30 points)

  1. Determine the requirements for the hold line location, parallel taxiway and two new acute-angled
taxiway serving the relocated Runway 8R-26L to accommodate the Airbus A380-800 and B777-
    300 aircraft. (30 points)
    a. The hold line separation requirements if a critical aircraft is on the approach and holding at the hold line.
    b. The standard separation required between the runway and the new parallel taxiway.
    c. The appropriate acute-angled taxiway exit location from the threshold of the Runway 8L
and Runway 26R, assuming that a runway exit speed of 55 knots is required.
    d. The appropriate length of the high-speed exit taxiway so that the A380-800 or B777-300
may slow to a speed of 20 miles per hour before entering the parallel taxiway.
    e. The exit angle required.
    f. The anticipated runway and taxiway occupancy times of the A380-800 or B777-300.
  2. Determine if the A380-800 and B777-300 will be able to land safely on Runway 8L (elevation 11
feet MSL) if the proposed high rise hotel is built. Conduct a Part 77 approach surface study and include your calculations in the appendix to your report. In your narrative consider the following questions: If the plane cannot safely land, how far would the threshold have to be displaced, or how far would the building have to be displaced, or how much lower should the building be? (15
    points)
  3. Determine if the A380-800 will be able to depart safely on Runway 26R (elevation 13 feet MSL) if the proposed high rise hotel is built. Conduct a departure path study given that lift-off distance
(LOD) are 6500 feet, landing gear up (LGU) distance is 8000 feet, and the take-off distance (TOD)
is 9333 feet, for the A380-800. Include your calculations in the appendix to the report. If the aircraft cannot depart safely, how far would the building have to be displaced? Or, what is the maximum elevation permitted? Based on your previous approach surface study make a final recommendation concerning this proposed high rise hotel. Report all of your findings clearly with detail.
