Write and “present” your own artistic
manifesto, declaring what you feel to be art’s main purpose, function, as well as the aesthetic your
“movement” will strive to embody. It does not matter if you are yourself an artist, in this assignment, you will be using others’ works as examples in order to advance your own theory of the arts.
First, read through some of the manifesto examples listed below this assignment sheet and familiarize yourself with the tone and form of this kind of argument purpose statement essay. Your movement will need
an appropriate name, so be sure and title your manifesto and name your movement in a way that reflects
the substance of your ideas (note the movement names in the titles listed here: The Futurist Manifesto,
Surrealist Manifesto, The Hacker Manifesto). Choose three works from three different mediums (i.e.
photography, music, sculpture, architecture, literature, painting, cinema, and so on) that will be the
representative pieces for your movement.
