Civil Engineering: Design Column & Beam

F’c = 4000 psi, NW conc.

Fy = 60,000 psi

SDL = 30 psf

LL = 50 psf

Slab S-1 and S-2 = 6”

  1. Design B-1 for bending and shear at points F and G. Assume 14” wide beam. For bending use

7, #8 or #9 bars only. For shear design, use the required spacing at critical section along the

entire span. Use #3 stirrups.

  1. Design the column at G. Assume height is 16’ and loads are as follows, PD = 350 K, PL = 250 K,

MD = 40 K-ft and ML = 30 K-ft. Use a 14” minimum or larger column. Make sure that column is not

slender. Or in other words, make sure the column is short as part of a braced, non-sway frame.
