A Synthesis Essay connecting three different stories. The Lottery By Shirley Jackson, A Good Man is hard to find by Flannery O’Connor, and “Cathedral” by Raymond Carver
Now that you have read and annotated “The Lottery” by Shirley Jackson, “Cathedral” by
Raymond Carver, and “A Good Man Is Hard to Find” by Flannery O’Connor, write an essay in
which you relate the stories to one another.
You can consider any aspect of these works, including literary devices, symbolism,
characterization, motifs, and themes.
Base your argument on an original claim, which you include in a well-developed thesis
statement.
Support your claim with higher-order critical thinking about all three stories.
You must also quote at least once from each of the following literary essays, finding some way
to synthesize the quotes into your own essay:
“The Lottery: Symbolic Tour de Force” by Helen Nebeker
“The Possibility of Resurrection: Re-Vision in Raymond Carver’s ‘Feathers’ and ‘Cathedral’” by
Nelson Hathcock
“Flannery O’Connor’s ‘Spoiled Prophet’” by T. W. Hendricks
