Housework and Childcare: Valuing unpaid work

Your writing should be clear, concise, and thoughtful, not just a regurgitation of the material presented in the
text. In your writing, please use the third person in your writing unless I am asking for an opinion.
In your writing for each question, I require that the sum of your initial posting be a minimum of 300 words and
must include references (APA style) for information cited. You are also expected to respond to one fellow
student per discussion question.
To respond to the questions, please review the embedded articles (Work and Family in the First Decade of the
21st Century and When Dad Stays Home Too) and the film (9-to-5 No Longer). The second discussion
question will require some of your own basic online research. Please only use reputable online sources and
make sure you properly cite your references.
Question #1
Based on what you’ve read so far, provide evidence for what you believe are the three (3) most significant
developments and directions for the study of Work and Family over the next decade. Provide citations and
references for your evidence!
Question #2
For this assignment, a common assumption is that stay-at-home parents (historically mothers) don’t work.
However, the reality is that unpaid household labor plays a significant role in the economy and within families.
Make a list of the housework and care work that a stay-at-home parent completes, such as meal preparation,
shopping, cleaning, errands, transportation, child care, and so on. Then research how much it would cost a
family to pay for these services out-of-pocket. Please include a discussion of how the labor of a stay-at-home
parent directly contributes to and supports the work of other family members.
