I call this early portion of the class “Fairytales, fables, and mother goose: their origins, the cultural imperatives from which they descend, and how they continue to shape modern thought.”
Hmmm. What does that mean and what can we learn from it?
Well, it’s a section that serves to allow us into a culture that (while long ago and diverse) is a lot like ours. In fact, it still exists all around us in many ways you may not have noticed. Modern writers and filmmakers certainly do.
Assignment:
Using Google and Google Scholar in your research
“Little Red Riding Hood”
Google “Aarne Thompson 333,” or “AT 333” the organizing system for fairy tales; and google “Path of needles path of pins.”
Read at least 6 versions of “Little Red Riding Hood,” and in an essay of three to five paragraphs, compare two of them to the version we saw in class.
Be specific.
Type and double space.
Assignment must have a properly formatted and alphabetized works cited page that includes all of the fairytale sources you found, even those that were not used in the comparison.
Use MLA format
For help with your MLA works cited page, consult pages 598-600 in the Bedford Handbook, 9th ed.
Or even better, go to this Youtube video until we cover it in class.
