Comparison Worksheet

Directions: Choose two family systems theories (Bowenian, Structural, Strategic, or Satir) and one individual counseling theory studied in this course (any theory studied in topics 1-5) and compare the three theories.
Part 1: Create a hypothetical family. Develop a scenario that has caused this family to seek counseling. The scenario should be 150-250 words in length. Be sure to include the following in the scenario: 1) Identify the members of the family; 2) The problem/focus of therapy; 3) Family rules which enabled the problem to continue; and 4) rationale for who the identified patient (IP) is.
Family Scenario:

The Johnson family is coming to counseling after a divorce. Kassy, their daughter, is struggling with the separation and does not like her mother, April’s, new boyfriend. Kassy insists that the divorce is her fault. Kassy reports that her rebellious behavior may have put a wedge between her parents, as they could never agree upon reinforcement or punishment consequences for Kassy. Gerald, Kassy’s father, has not engaged in a new relationship, but in attempt to make Kassy feel better, he dotes on her, purchasing gifts and trips. He will often allow her to stay out past curfew, and does not enforce punishments. This, in turn, makes 13 year old Kassy exhibit more anger and hostility toward mom’s new boyfriend in addition to feeling as though April is not trying hard enough as a parent.

Part 2: Complete the specific fields listed in the chart for each theory chosen. All sections will require a 50-75-word description except for the section where you list the three treatment interventions. Include a minimum of six scholarly resources in addition to the course textbook and in-text citation as appropriate. Include a full APA reference for the resources used below.

Roles of the Counselor and Client(s) (50-75 words each) The counselor acts an objective spectator who provide clients with advice or other types of feedback.
The client should have a good understanding into the family and should be motivated to make necessary deviations into his/her life. The clinician’s role in SF therapy is to be the leader but also a member during the process. The intent of the clinician is to promote the positive steps towards changing to structure of the family system and improving the experiences of the family.

The client’s role during SF therapy is to work collaboratively with her clinician as well as her family members to develop an understanding of the structural needs and expectations.

(Murdock, 2017) The client and the clinician are viewed as equals throughout the therapeutic process and the counselor represents a companion moreso than an expert. Clinicians’ role is to provide positive regard for while supporting the idea that the client is capable of change. They do not seek to judge the client, but to meet them where they are at, which makes the client more comfortable in the journey. The counselor should develop an empathetic understanding of the client.

The role of the client in PC is to be their authentic selves. The client possesses the responsibility to be as connected as possible to their experience and is the guide to success.

(Hazler, 2016).
