Women have traditionally been under represented in the scientific fields. Identify one major scientific paper or writing by a woman and discuss the significance of the work and/or the contribution to the advancement of biology or medicine by the scientist. In your paper, include any challenges, obstacles, and/or opposition the scientist may have faced during her career as a female scientist as appropriate or relevant. I want you to peruse through major scientific publications, reports, books, etc., and identify a writing that is a first-person account of the author’s own groundbreaking thoughts, theory, and/or research.
- Does this paper, article, or writing excite you? What about it do you find exciting? Hopefully,
these reasons will provide you with the material/arguments you need to defend your selection.
2.Does the work carried out by the scientist and/or her life/career inspire or impress you? Why?
- There may be similar areas of research and/or thought–why does this scientist’s work stand out in particular to you (aside from the fact that she is a woman)?
How does it compare to them? How successful was the work and how receptive were her male colleagues to her work?
- Would you consider this scientist to be a pioneer for other women–why or why not?
5.What obstacles have women scientists faced in the field represented by the scientist you have selected? Do you think any progress has been made with regard to the involvement and/or acceptance of women in this field? Why or why not?
