In the Republic, Socrates argues that the soul (mind) has three main parts: appetite, spirit, and reason. Do you
think this setup is adequate to explain human behavior? Or do you think the soul is arranged in a different
way? Compose an essay in which you argue either in favor or against Plato’s picture of the soul. Be sure to
organize your essay around the reasons you give. You may also want to use examples to make your argument
clear. Finally, respond to an objection that someone might make against your view.
