The literature review is not an annotated bibliography. You are not simply describing different studies and their findings on a topic. Rather, you are summarizing and critically evaluating the current literature on the topic. According to the APA manual, a good introduction answers the following questions:
Why is this problem important?
How does the study relate to previous work in the area? If other aspects of this study have been reported previously, how does this report differ from, and build on, the earlier report?
What are the primary and secondary hypotheses and objectives of the study, and what, if any, are the links to theory?
How do the hypotheses and research design relate to one another?
What are the theoretical and practical implications of the study?
Be sure to create within the summary an argument for why this topic is important and the issues that further research needs to address. Because this is an important component of the assignment, please be sure to address the following in your writing:
Define and clarify the problem
Summarize previous investigations to inform the reader of the state of research
Identify relations, contradictions, gaps, and inconsistencies in the literature
Suggest the next step or steps in solving the problem. In other words, make a case for why additional research needs to be conducted to fill important gaps in the scientific literature on the topic.
This must be written in a research-scientific format, as if it is to be submitted to a journal for publication.
