Reflection as a tool for self-assessment is an integral part of the learning process. It is a habit of master learners. Reflection gives meaning to experience. It links past and present experiences, turns the experience into practice, and prepares individuals for future practice. To help you critically reflect on your CBLR field experience you will complete two reflection journals, in which you summarize what you have observed at your placement, discuss how you make sense of the observation in reference to your learning in the course BEDUC 441, and reflect on what you have learned from the CBLR experience as a language learner, user, and potentially a language teacher. Use the following questions as prompts, but do not feel obligated to ONLY respond to those questions. If there are other areas of observation that you want to discuss and reflect on, feel free to do so.
What are some basic information about your CBLR experience in terms of your site, demographics of your students, their cultural backgrounds, and your responsibilities?
What have you noticed about your students’ first language and English proficiency in terms of vocabulary, grammar, listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills?
What have you noticed about your students’ learning styles, characteristics, motivations, and attitudes?
Based on your observation, what are your students’ learning strengths and needs?
How have theories introduced in BEDUC 441 helped you understand what you observed at your CBLR site?
What support do your students need? What recommendations, if any, will you make to your CBLR site to better support your students’ learning?
What are you learning about yourself as a language learner, user, and teacher through your CBLR experience?
